Since he covers the San Francisco 49ers for NBC Sports Bay Area, he has a better understanding than most of what the Broncos offense will look like under Rich Scangarello. Scangarello was the 49ers quarterbacks coach in 2018 and will run a similar offense in Denver. So who better to talk about what the Broncos will do at fullback and tight end than Maiocco? On Friday’s 1st & 10 @ 10 on Orange and Blue 760, Andrew Mason and Steve Atwater talked about those two positions in particular. Maiocco said he would expect Scangarello to utilize Andy Janovich in a similar fashion that Kyle Shanahan used Kyle Juszczyk. Maiocco added that Shanahan finds the weakness of a defense and exploits it. One way to do that is a versatile fullback. If defenses put their focus on the tight ends and running backs, that leaves the fullback with opportunities to make plays. That could mean the legend of Janovich will grow even larger in 2019. As for the tight end, look no further than the success of George Kittle for what Denver hopes to (eventually) get from Noah Fant.
